About Echo
Echocardiography and specifically transthoracic echocardiography is our core business, it’s what we do day in day out across the country with up to 20 clinics running simultaneously at any one time.
The echocardiogram uses ultrasound to image the heart providing information about both the structure and the function of the heart, thereby allowing the detection of the majority of acquired and congenital cardiac abnormalities. Echo is a safe, non invasive procedure during which the ultrasound probe (transducer) is applied to the patient’s chest wall. Typically, an echo takes approximately 30-40 minutes requiring the patient to lay semi recumbent on their left side for the majority of the scan. The Cardiac Physiologist conducting the scan relies on accessing various acoustic ‘windows’ to image the heart.

The quality of echo report provided is highly dependent on the experience and skill level of the Cardiac Physiologist performing the scan, for this reason it is crucial that cardiac physicians do not work in isolation but rather in an environment where peer-review, quality assurance and ongoing training are also integrated to provide the best possible clinical support.
It is in creating this “virtual” department in which all our staff work that Echotech leads the way; the largest organisation (based on number of scans per year) with BSE departmental accreditation in the country, and the first to be community based.
